You Be the Judge: Alabama Christmas Lights Puts Fight in Fight Song

Nov 24, 2018 | Allen A. Ritchie

Alabama Yea Alabama Christmas Lights

We in Alabama like our Christmas lights. And we will fight our cousins or the local municipality to keep them shining brightly.

But do you want the Griswold’s, the family in the movie Christmas Vacation, living next to you?

People on both sides have used a variety of legal tactics to get their way. These include:

  • Religious objections
  • Noise ordinances
  • Public disturbance complains
  • Home owner association rules
  • Cost to the public
  • De-annexation

And many across the country are still fighting.

One family in Idaho recently won when a Federal Court jury awarded them $75,000. The homeowners say they will use the money to move.

One home now has 200,000 bulbs. The Griswold’s only had 25,000.

One community used a complaint about the homeowner’s dogs to try to force them out. The Christmas lovers brought in a camel for the holidays.

A team in Etowah County, Alabama, just won the ABC-TV show Great American Light Fight and received $50,000.

You Be the Judge

Now I want you to be the jury on a very Alabamian home. Take a look at the video above. Would you like to live near this display?

If on the jury, would you vote for the homeowner or the complaining neighbors. Should anyone be given any money? What is the reason for your vote?

Something to talk about this holiday with your family and friends.
