Hold on to your cell phone. You are driving along with some of the safest drivers in the nation.

Now if you are going down I-10 at rush hour, you might not think so, but the Allstate America’s Best Driver’s Report® 2019 lists Mobile as the 17th safest place to drive in America.

Here are some of the stats:

  • On average, we go 11 and a half years between filing a car wreck insurance claim. The national average is 10 and a half.
  • We also “hard brake” about 16 times for ever 1,000 miles. The national average is 19 times.

So, you want to know where NOT to go this 4th of July. The worst city cited was Baltimore, MD, followed by Washington, D.C. It is not much better in Los Angeles. The worst city in the deep south is Baton Rouge, LA.

The safest cities are not known for their high vacation traffic and include Brownsville, TX, Boise, ID and Huntsville, AL.

Here are my top 3 things to stay safe this holiday. They come from decades of meeting with accident victims.

  • Buckle up. Really, I have to mention this. I just heard of an accident in which children were hurt by not being buckled up in the backseat. Be the parent. Make them buckle up.
  • Keep a safe distance. Remember that hard brake statistic. You are going to have to hit it hard sometime this year.
  • Don’t drink and drive. Uber can be one of the blessings of living in modern times.
